Routes and examples
Angel investment
Individual investors may invest their own money, sometimes through a network or syndicate. The founder negotiates ownership and rights.
Indian Angel Network describes an angel network; verify the relevant application process and investor identity directly.
Pre-seed / venture capital
Funds invest in ventures they believe can grow, often in exchange for equity or a convertible instrument. Fit depends on sector, stage, business model and fund mandate.
Accel Atoms describes pre-seed and seed support. Its FAQ identifies AI and Atoms X cohorts and describes equity or convertible investment; check current programme terms rather than assuming acceptance or follow-on funding.
Investor discovery
Platforms and networks can facilitate introductions; they are not a promise of investment.
Startup India Investor Connect and recognised incubators can be starting points. Check the platform's current terms, fees and investor verification.
Revenue, loans and grants
Customer revenue, bank loans and grants can also fund growth, with different costs and obligations.
Compare the government support directory before assuming equity is the only route. Loans must be repaid; grants may have milestones and restrictions.
Understand the terms
A term sheet may address valuation, instrument, ownership, board rights, liquidation preference, information rights and founder commitments. A convertible instrument may defer the final share price while creating dilution later. Ask an independent lawyer and accountant to explain the complete agreement, taxes, compliance and downside scenarios before signing.
Illustration: If an investor buys 10% of a company immediately after a new issue, founders and other existing holders together hold 90% after that round, before any other option-pool or transaction effects. Real cap tables and instruments can be more complicated.
Verify before sharing or paying
Research the investor's identity, mandate and track record, use official contact channels, and obtain a written fee and process explanation. Check a fund or intermediary's registration where relevant using SEBI's recognised-intermediary lists. Registration checks do not imply endorsement or investment suitability. Be cautious of guaranteed-funding claims and unexplained upfront fees.
